Maths

Maths is crucial! It’s all around us in the real world…

Studying Mathematics helps students develop a logical approach to problem-solving, as well as their mathematical knowledge and skills. It is therefore useful preparation to a wide range of degree courses. For many STEM and economics degree courses, A level Mathematics is an essential pre-requisite. Physics and maths are subjects that naturally complement each other. Especially as physics has a heavy mathematical element for fairly obvious reasons. For others, such as geography and finance, studying AS/A level Mathematics is very useful, as it helps to keep students’ mathematical skills fresh and prepares them for the maths they will encounter during the course.

At Advanced Tuition we pride ourselves on not just preparing our student for their exams but developing a passion and understanding for the subject within our students.

Pure mathematics, which develops algebraic and geometrical reasoning, underpins the other disciplines. You will also study aspects of ‘applied maths’: the disciplines of mechanics and statistics which require mathematical modelling to make sense of real-life problems. You will learn how to model real-life situations in mathematical terms, how models are refined and how to identify limitations within this process.

Aside from the applications in work and study described above, a firm grasp of mathematics is helpful in everyday life for things like interpreting graphs and statistics in news reports and managing personal finances. GCSE Maths equips you with some good basics, but A-Level Maths will secure you with the knowledge and confidence to carry out tasks you are likely to want to do in the future, such as: work out the best way to pay off student debts, choose the most cost-effective mortgage, and make sensible investments.
